  • As the fruits ripen, the green points beneath the petals keep growing and make a star around the seed head.
  • Its leaves are usually in threes, unlike many other cinquefoils.

About the species

Identification

Upright plant 20–50 cm tall with thick, green, hairy stems that branch above the middle. Leaves mostly three-part (three leaflets), sometimes five; the middle part may be shallowly three-lobed. Leaf parts are oval to narrow, coarsely toothed, green on both sides. Flowers are small and yellow (petals about 4–5 mm) in loose, branched clusters. The green pointed parts under the petals are often as long as or longer than the petals and lengthen around the seed head, giving a starry look. Many tiny hard seeds form inside the enlarged green cup. Similar cinquefoils often have more than three-part leaves. Flowers June–September.
