A slender annual wildflower with pale yellow, lipped flowers that appear in late summer. It often grows along roadsides, field edges, fallow ground and coastal meadows. It lives partly by tapping the roots of nearby grasses and other plants while still making its own food.

- It is a partial parasite that draws water and nutrients from the roots of nearby plants.
- The flowers are pollinated by insects.
