Narrow-Leaved Hawk's-Beard is a slender annual in the daisy family. It carries many small, pale yellow, dandelion-like heads on branched stems. You can see it in open, dry and often disturbed places such as fields, roadsides and rocky ground across northern Eurasia, and it has spread to other regions.
Did you know?
- The flower heads are tiny—about 1–1.5 cm across—much smaller than a dandelion’s.
- Its seeds have a white tuft that lets the wind carry them far.
About the species
Identification
Slender annual 10–60 cm tall. Upright stem smooth to slightly hairy near the top, unbranched or branching above. Ground-level leaves form a rosette that usually withers by flowering; they are toothed or lobed. Upper leaves are narrow and almost toothless, sometimes lobed, with bases that point backward along the stem. Flower clusters are branched, with many small, pale yellow, dandelion-like heads 1–1.5 cm wide. Seeds are small, ridged and brownish with a white tuft. Look for the very narrow upper leaves and the small heads to tell it from dandelions and sow-thistles. Flowers in Finland from June to September.
