Marsh Hawk's-Beard is a tall, yellow-flowered perennial of wet ground. You can spot it in damp woods, by springs and streams, and on wet meadows and fens. Its bright, dandelion-like heads stand in a loose, branching cluster on a mostly unbranched stem.
Did you know?
- The green cup under each flower head has dark bristles and tiny black dots — a distinctive clue.
- Its seeds ride the wind on pale silky hairs, much like a dandelion.
About the species
Identification
30–80 cm tall, mostly unbranched, sometimes dividing near the top into a loose spray. Lower leaves large, on stalks, bluish beneath, oval with coarse teeth; upper leaves smaller, toothed, and wrapping around the stem. Many long-stalked, bright yellow heads about 3 cm across, like small dandelions, in a loose cluster. The green cup below each head is covered with dark bristles and tiny black bumps. Seeds are narrow with a pale, silky tuft. Can be confused with hawkweeds; pick Marsh Hawk's-Beard when the site is very wet and the cups are dark-bristly. Flowers in June–July in Finland.
