About the species
Identification
An annual, 20–80 cm tall, with a stiff upright, often branched stem that has sharp angles lined with long, rough, yellowish bristles pointing downward. Leaves grow in pairs facing each other, are oval, coarsely toothed and hairy. Flowers form tight clusters near the top and upper leaf joints. Each flower is 2–3.5 cm, pale yellow with a two-lipped shape; the lower lip has three lobes with a purple patch in the middle and two small blunt bumps at its base. Later it splits into four small hard seeds. Unlike other hemp-nettles, flowers are large and yellow with a purple blotch. In Finland it flowers from July to September.
