Thread Rush is a slender, hair‑thin rush of wet places. It has round green stems with no obvious leaves, and the flower head seems to sit on the side of the stem because the stem tip continues past it. You can spot it on open, soggy ground such as shores, wet meadows and ditches.
Did you know?
- The flower head looks side‑attached because a long, sharp stem tip continues past it.
- It is wind‑pollinated, so it doesn’t need to attract insects.
About the species
Identification
Perennial, 20–60 cm tall. Stems very thin (about 1 mm), soft, round and green; no normal green leaves. At the base are shiny, pale yellow‑brown wrappers. A long, narrow, pointed stem tip continues above the small flower cluster, so the cluster appears to come from the side. Flowers tiny, brownish, usually 5–10 together. Later small, pale brown, dry pods form. Tell it from other rushes by its very slender stems and that long stem‑like tip beyond the flower head. Flowers in Finland in June–July.
