About the species
Identification
Loosely tufted, tall, grass‑like plant 30–120 cm. Stems upright, solid and sharply three‑edged, feeling rough. Leaves dark green, 4–10 mm wide, about as long as the stem; edges curl downward; lower leaf bases brown. The flowering part has several long, cylindrical clusters: 2–4 male clusters at the top, 2–6 female ones below. Clusters are dark brown, upright or slightly drooping; a long leaf‑like bract often sticks out above. Later, small hard seeds develop inside tiny sacs. Similar to Water Sedge but with longer, darker clusters and very sharp, three‑edged stems. Flowers in Finland in June–July.
