How common: Very common

Alien species

Scentless Mayweed is a daisy-like annual that often pops up where soil is disturbed. It has white, daisy-style flowers with a yellow center but, true to its name, little or no smell when crushed. You can see it in fields, roadsides, yards and other open places.

Did you know?

  • Despite its daisy look, it is almost scentless—hence the name.
  • It can hybridise with Sea Mayweed (Tripleurospermum maritimum) where they grow together.

About the species

Identification

Erect plant 10–80 cm tall, usually branching above. Stems green. Leaves soft and very finely divided into many narrow threads, giving a dill-like look. Flower-heads on long stalks, 2–5 cm across, with a yellow center and a ring of white petal-like pieces (usually fewer than 20). Almost no scent when leaves or heads are crushed. Seeds small and brown. Easy clues: oxeye daisy has broader leaves; pineappleweed lacks the white ring and smells strong; sea mayweed has thicker, fleshy leaves and is mostly coastal. Flowers in Finland from June to October.
