Alien species
Dropwort is a slender perennial of dry, sunny grasslands. It makes airy clusters of creamy white, almost scentless flowers above leaves that are cut into many narrow segments. It is found widely in Europe and into Central and Northern Asia, often on lime‑rich ground.
Did you know?
- Some of its roots swell into bead‑like knobs, which gave rise to the name “dropwort.”
- Unlike its relative meadowsweet, its flowers have little or no scent.
About the species
Identification
20–50 cm tall with a stiff, upright stem from a rootstock; some roots are swollen like small beads. Most leaves are at the base, long and divided into many narrow, toothed segments with tiny extra segments between; 1–3 smaller leaves on the stem. Flowers in a wide, branched spray (about 5–10 cm). Buds pinkish; open flowers small, creamy white and almost scentless. Later it forms small straight, fine‑haired hard seeds (3–4 mm). Differs from meadowsweet by its drier sites, shorter height and airier, less scented flowers; from yarrow by its open, starry flowers (not flat heads). Flowers in Finland in June–July.
