Invasive alien species

Convolvulus sepium is a vigorous, twining perennial vine with showy white, trumpet-shaped flowers. It climbs over shrubs, fences and tall grasses in moist, rich places and along shores and waterways. The long stems wrap around supports and can reach a few metres.

Did you know?

  • Just below each flower sit two big leaf‑like pieces that wrap around the base – a key clue for this species.
  • It can smother nearby plants by climbing over them with stems several metres long.

About the species

Identification

A twisting climber up to about 3 m long. Stems smooth and hairless, winding around other plants. Leaves on long stalks, broadly heart‑shaped with a sharp tip; the base has a narrow V‑shaped notch that creates two pointed corners. Flowers are single where a leaf joins the stem: large, white, trumpet‑shaped, about 3–6 cm, opening in sunshine. Just under the flower are two large leaf‑like pieces that almost enclose the base. Dry round seed case follows. Compared with field bindweed, the flowers are much larger and the two pieces under the flower are big and wrap the base. Flowers in Finland in July–August.
