How common: Very common

Bottle Sedge is a tall wetland plant that often forms wide patches along lakeshores, rivers and bogs. Its flower heads show slim brown male parts above and thicker pale green female parts that develop many small, bottle‑shaped pods.

Did you know?

  • The “bottle” name comes from the swollen, bottle‑like pod around each seed.
  • Large stands can look bluish‑grey compared to the grasses around them.

About the species

Identification

20–100 cm tall, loosely tufted but spreading into broad patches by creeping underground stems. Upright stems feel three‑edged. Leaves flat or slightly channelled, 2–8 mm wide, grey‑ to blue‑green; bases brownish. Flower heads have several clusters: 2–4 slim brown ones at the top (male) and 2–4 thicker pale green ones below (female). Each female flower sits in a pale, swollen, bottle‑shaped pod that narrows to a long tip; clusters may be upright or drooping. Compared with Bladder Sedge, these pods narrow more sharply and have a longer tip. Flowers in Finland in June–July.
