Arabidopsis suecica is a slender annual in the mustard family with small white flowers and long seed pods. It is often seen on open, dry and disturbed ground such as rocks, field edges, roadsides and railways. It closely resembles the common Arabidopsis thaliana.
Did you know?
- It arose as a natural hybrid between Arabidopsis thaliana and Cardaminopsis arenosa.
- Its petals are slightly longer than those of the very similar Arabidopsis thaliana.
About the species
Identification
An annual 15–40 cm tall. Stems one or several, branched and softly hairy. Leaves form a circle at ground level; these are oval with coarse teeth and often with paired side lobes. Smaller toothed leaves grow up the stem. Small white flowers with a pale yellow base (four petals, about 4–6 mm) stand in a loose cluster at the stem tips. After flowering, long thin pods 2–3 cm spread outwards on short stalks, each with many tiny seeds. Differs from Arabidopsis thaliana by the more clearly lobed basal leaves and slightly longer petals. Flowers in Finland from May to July.
